Nanairo Tower is a micro graphic adventure developed and published by Nekogames as a free browser game on 2016-11-21. Despite looking like an 8-bit RPG, the game is a point-and-click adventure. It was programmed in JavaScript.

You start the game at the bottom of a tower inhabited by an evil wizard. You must climb the tower and destroy the wizard, but you begin empty-handed. Luckily, there are chests found throughout the tower which contain important items that can be used elsewhere in the tower.

While browsing the titles made by Nekogames in Flashpoint, this game's screenshot caught my eye. I began playing it and found it to be quite interesting, but I was disappointed when I beat it after only a couple minutes. I then spent a bit more time to beat it again after finding every item.

Good

  • Although I haven't played many 8-bit Japanese home computer games, I've seen plenty of screenshots, and these graphics are spot-on. It uses the same 8-color palette and has similar charming tile work for a great feel.

Bad

  • The game is only in Japanese. Thankfully, its iconographic nature makes it easy enough to understand, but you can also use Google lens to read the kanji.
  • As far as I can tell, the acid on floor 4 doesn't do anything. This was a missed opportunity.
  • I wish the graphics only scaled at interval levels. At most resolutions they create an ugly Moiré pattern.

Ugly

  • The game is far too short. I finished it in only a couple minutes, and, on my first play-through, I didn't even find two of the items, I just got lucky at the end. A lot more could have been done with this engine; it has a good setup, but it isn't fully realized.
  • The game lacks audio.
