MakeMKV

MakeMKV is a freeware program designed to rip encrypted video and audio from DVDs, HD-DVD, and Blu-ray discs so you can create digital backups of your collection in MKV format. It can also modify existing MKV files. Binaries are made for Macintosh and Windows.

Personal

Ever since I bought an Internet capable TV, I mostly stream video from the Internet or from a portable hard drive attached to my TV. Because of this, I've moved my collection of optical discs into my basement to get them out of the way. However, when I feel the need to watch one of my old movies, I have to run to the basement and find it, then fiddle around with my DVD player. Becoming annoyed with this, I decided to rip the few DVDs I watch frequently to digital video so I wouldn't have to do this anymore. This was the first free DVD ripper I found, and it was easy to use and worked perfectly on my first attempt.
