Acclaim Entertainment was an American video game publisher founded in 1987 to capitalize on the growing market created by the Nintendo Entertainment System. They primarily published poorly-made licensed games made by shadow developers, but they did manage to get their hands on a couple decent games from time to time. Although they saw a large amount of success through the 1990s, a series of bad decisions and unethical business practices caused them to go bankrupt in 2004. The Acclaim brand survives, but the original company and its various subsidiaries do not.
Like many children I was often tricked into playing shoddy licensed games, and Acclaim was a strong purveyor of them.
