Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey is an general science documentary television series first shown on 2014-03-09. It is a modernization of Carl Sagan's Cosmos: A Personal Voyage featuring many of the same subjects, but also includes a lot of new segments with updated science. The show is presented by Neil deGrasse Tyson, and the episodes were written by Ann Druyan and Steven Soter, two of the writers of the original series. It was later followed up by a third season, Cosmos: Possible Worlds.

Reviews

Good

  • Just like the original, this series covers important details from a variety of the major branches of science including astronomy, biology, physics, and geology as well as all of the major scientists of their fields.
  • The show uses a lot of useful metaphors for making complex topics easier for amateurs.
  • I like that the show doesn't pull any punches with the historical evils of religion.
  • The animations are artistic and attractive, and a lot of famous actors are used as voice actors.
  • The new design of the Ship of the Imagination certainly looks better than the original, but it's still pretty dumb looking.
  • The show nicely pays homage to the original series, while still expanding upon it greatly.

Bad

  • The CGI uses a ridiculous amount of lens flares which is really annoying.
  • It's a minor thing, but don't like how, in the animated segments, the texture of objects remains the same as the object is animated.
  • Episodes were designed around commercial breaks, which disrupts the flow of the episodes.

Ugly

  • Nothing.
