This article is about the various wallpaper graphics that have been bundled with the Windows operating system over the years ever since they were first included in Windows 3.0 in 1990. I have collected all of the wallpaper graphics bundled with every major release of Windows including versions 3.0, 3.1, 95, 98, ME, and NT 4. As time goes by, and versions of Windows go obsolete, I will add more to this archive. The full collection can be downloaded below.
My first computer had Windows 3.0, and, although it only came with a handful of wallpapers, I enjoyed looking at them, and liked creating my own using Paintbrush and became fascinated with the art of making images "tileable." As Microsoft updated their versions of Windows, they bundled in new wallpapers. I don't use wallpapers because I find them distracting, but I've still enjoyed seeing the new designs over the years. I have spent some time collecting old versions of Windows and pulling out all the wallpaper images to create this archive in an attempt to preserve the old images that have been dropped because they are a part of my history. For most of these images, it was the first time I had seen them in decades and they rekindled old memories from the 1990s.
These are my favorite Windows wallpapers:
Arches - Windows 3.1
Chess - Windows 3.0
This archive contains all of the wallpapers bundled with Windows 3.0, 3.1, 95, 98, ME, and NT 4.
