They Shoot Horses, Don't They? is a novel written by Horace McCoy and first published in 1935.
It is a depressing tale about a 1930s couple trying to win a dance marathon contest. The clinically depressed Gloria convinces average guy Robert to be her partner, in an attempt to get into the pictures with the prize money, but she's unable to pretend she doesn't hate the world or herself, and Robert has a hard time coping with her. The book was also made into a film.

My friend Jackie really loved this book and film. I watched the film with her and liked it, then, when she was selling some of her old books, I found a copy of this in her pile and expressed an interest in reading it. She gave me the book, and I read it, and enjoyed it also.
