The Only Ones is a new wave song by The Sounds. It was recorded in early 2009 and released as track 10 on the album Crossing the Rubicon on 2009-06-02. The song was written and composed by Jesper Anderberg, Félix Rodríguez, Fredrik Nilsson, Maja Ivarsson, and Johan Bengtsson and sung by Maja Ivarsson.

The song opens with a piano solo, then Maja's vocal join and sing the first verse. The song picks up with the first chorus, and really gets going before the second verse. I love the instruments in this song, and Maja's whining vocals really fit with the song's mood.

I haven't been able to find any specifics about the song, but it seems to be about two lovers taking part in a rebellion against oppressors. I've read that it is possibly a reference to the dismantling of the Berlin Wall, but I have no evidence to support this, and the members of the band were only around 9 to 11 years old at the time and living in Sweden. The lyrics seem to indicate that, even though they were successful at fighting off the villains, the pair still separated.

Personal

I first heard this song when I listened to Crossing the Rubicon after buying it because I was impressed with The Sounds from an indie playlist. I don't know if I immediately liked the song, but after several listens, it became one of my favorite songs.

Lyrics

Where I grew up it was different
There was no violence or like other towns
But when I came home from school that night
I saw the cops were on the run
There were kids on the wall reaching up to the sky
Like a culture shock of joy
It sent me into a strong fascination
And what's been lost is back

'Cause we were the only ones
Darling and me this time it's going down

You know where I belong
And you know it's time that we let go
Been drifting so far away from home
November came back and all was gone
You know where I belong, my darling
This time it's going down...

When December came I was older
And snow was finally on the ground
Soldiers lining up, cameras feeding the world
With pictures that would mark my mind
I heard this woman scream as she was begging for trust
And turning ghost-like behind the court
A shotgun blast, as new years passed
Oppression was on the run

'Cause we were the only ones
Darling and me this time they're going down

You know where I belong
You know it's time that we let go
Been drifting so far away from home
November came back and all was gone
You know where I belong, my darling
This time they're going down...

It's going down

You know where I belong
You know it's time that we let go
Been drifting so far away from home
November came back and now it's gone
You know where I belong, my darling
It's going down... down.
