Tetris DX is a port of Tetris developed and published by Nintendo for the Game Boy Color on 1998-10-21. It has four different game modes. Marathon is traditional endless Tetris that keeps getting harder until you eventually lose. Ultra is a 3-minute high score rush. 40 lines requires you to clear 40 lines to end the game, and Vs. mode pits you against either another player via the link cable, or the CPU at three different difficulty levels. In addition to the new game modes, the game is in color, has save slots for multiple players, has new music, and new and more complex animation.

Personal

I played Tetris DX in the late 2000s just to see if there was anything unique about the game. I quickly discovered that there wasn't anything all that interesting about it that wasn't already available on dozens of other Tetris clones. Years later, just to add it to my listed of finished games, I beat the Vs. COM on hard mode and finished the 40 Lines game at level 9 and 5 high. I finished both these challenges on 2020-02-18.

Status

I don't own this game, but I have beaten all single-player modes that can be beaten.

Best Version: Game Boy Color

— This section contains spoilers! —

Good

  • Having a portable Tetris is always enjoyable, but having one that saves your high scores is especially nice.
  • The animations for completing various challenges are fun to watch.
  • Having a built-in AI to play against is quite nice when you don't have a friend nearby and you're tired of playing single-player mode.
  • The music is a little more dynamic with three tempos based on how close you are to losing.

Bad

  • Even at its hardest difficulty setting, the 40 Lines challenge is too easy.
  • Without actually showing the CPU playing in vs. mode, there is no way to know if it isn't cheating, and, considering how it plays, there is reason to believe that it is.
  • I didn't find the new background music to be all that great, especially compared to the tunes from the original.

Ugly

  • There just isn't enough here to justify the game. Sure, it has basic color and there are a couple new play modes, but, for the most part, Tetris is Tetris.

Box Art

All regions use this same box art. Brightly-colored tetrominoes fall from space as a space shuttle flies between them.
