Stargazers is a symphonic power metal song by Nightwish. It was recorded in 1988 from August to October and first released on the album Oceanborn on 1998-12-07. The music and lyrics were written and composed by Tuomas Holopainen.

On the album recording Tarja Turunen sings lead vocals, electric guitar is played by Emppu Vuorinen, keyboards are played by Tuomas Holopainen, bass guitar is played by Sami Vänskä, drums are played by Jukka Nevalainen, violin is played by Kaisli Kaivola and Plamen Dimov, viola is played by Markku Palola, cello is played by Erkki Hirvikangas, and flute is played by Esa Lehtinen.

The meaning of the song appears to be a poetic comparison between the earth drifting through space and the way an ancient mariners would use the stars for navigation, and the music adds the proper epic drama of the process. Clarifying some of the metaphors, the "third vagrant" is the Earth as it is the third planet from the Sun, the "mother and child" are the Earth and Moon, "hydrogen lakes" both describes the fact that water is partially hydrogen, and that the space in our solar system is mostly hydrogen, "ambrosial merry-go-round" refers to the forever spinning of the planet.

Personal

In the early 2000s, I developed a short-lived crush on a woman I met at a Renaissance festival and after reading an online profile of hers I saw that she had listed Nightwish as one of her favorite bands, so I downloaded some Nightwish songs. This was the very first song I heard, and I immediately loved it. The instrumentation is epic.

Lyrics

A grand oasis in the vastness of gloom
Child of dew-spangled cobweb, Mother to the Moon
Constellations beholders of the third vagrant
Theater for the play of life

Tragedienne of heavens
Watching the eyes of the night
Sailing the virgin oceans
A planet ride for mother and child

Floating upon the quiet hydrogen lakes
In this ambrosial merry-go-round they will gaze
Ephemeral life touched by a billion-year-show
Separating the poet from the woe

Tragedienne of heavens
Watching the eyes of the night
Sailing the virgin oceans
A planet ride for mother and child

Oracle of the Delfian Domine
Witness of Adam's frailty
Seer of the master prophecy
The stellar world her betrothed

Wanderers in cosmic caravan
Universal bond - The Starborn

A son in search for the truth
Following the pages of Almagest
Discovering the origin of dreams
Stargazers ride through the ancient realms

Tragedienne of heavens
Watching the eyes of the night
Sailing the virgin oceans
A planet ride for mother and child
