Skate Boardin' is an extreme sports racing video game developed by Imagineering and published by Absolute Entertainment for the Atari 2600 in 1987.

In the game, you're trying to get to school, but construction crews have left a maze of equipment, and, as a totally radical skate boarder, you can't pass up the opportunity to thrash the pavement. Your goal is to jump off every ramp and cruise through every tube while still having enough time to get to school before it starts.

Because this game was released so late in the life of the Atari 2600, I never heard anything about its existence. Having already beaten Super Skateboardin', I decided I should also try the original game. It took me several tries, sometimes reaching the end with plenty of time, but having missed a single obstacles, but I was finally able to beat it.

Best Version: Atari 2600

Good

  • Though it's rudimentary, the game is one of the few Atari 2600 titles with constant background music, and I like how it's dynamic, stopping when you crash. However, by 1987, pretty much every other game had significantly better music, so this was by no means ahead of its time.

Bad

  • Though good for the platform, the graphics and sound are still extremely dated for the time.
  • Having to line up your board to go successfully through the tubes is a pain.

Ugly

  • The game just isn't very fun. Launching off a ramp is fun the first time, but there isn't anything to jump over, so it quickly becomes dull. There are indications that more was planned, like the trucks on the street, but you don't even have to cross the road, so they're just decoration. Basically, the game could have been much more interesting, but not enough time was spent trying to make it fun, it ends up just being a rather dull timed maze. The game has 64 rooms, but 37 of them have nothing important in them.
