Shanghai (universe)
Shanghai (上海) is a series of mahjong solitaire video games initially developed by Activision in 1986, and the first video game to popularize mahjong solitaire in the West. The series began when Brodie Lockard programmed a version of the game for the PLATO in 1981 called Mah-Jongg, then ported it to the Macintosh Classic in 1986.
Personal
I had known about mahjong solitaire since 1991 because my family's first home computer came with Taipei. In 1995, my friend Kevin was pleased to have gotten a copy of Shanghai: Great Moments. When he showed it to me, I was unimpressed and told him it was just Taipei, not realizing that Taipei was a rip-off of Shanghai. We didn't play it much then. Over the years, I played a couple other mahjong solitaire games including Mahjong Titans, and always appreciated the casual nature of the game. In 2022, I finally played the first Shanghai game, and, in 2023, I played the game the series is based on, Mah-Jongg.
