The Beatles, a popular rock group, in the 1960s.

Rock is a blanket term for various sub-genres of popular music. Rock music is generally centered around the electric guitar and usually features drums and bass. The songs usually use a 4/4 time signature and a verse-chorus lyrical format. The name is derived from the 1940s and 50s genre, rock and roll, but its influences come from various additional genres like blues, rockabilly, folk, country, rhythm and blues, soul, and jazz. The genre came into its own in the 1950s and 60s, now referred to as "classic" rock, and was the most popular form of music in the Western world for a couple decades. The term is still widely used today for many subsequent genres like psychedelic rock, progressive rock, punk rock, folk rock, hard rock, heavy metal, alternative rock, indie rock, and many others.

As rock drifted into other genres, it's traditional form began to wane and, by the late 1990s, few popular artists could be considered just "rock," and, by the late 2000s, even the genres which evolved from rock were losing ground to genres with African American roots like rap, R&B, and hip hop.

Personal

Although my childhood years were in the 1980s and 90s, most of the music I listened to during this period was 1960s and 70s rock. This was primarily because of the classic rock preference of my father whose tastes influenced both my older brother and sister who usually controlled the radio. My mother, to a lesser extant, also introduced me to rock music, in particular, what would become my favorite band, Queen. With those seeds planted, I listened primarily to classic rock radio stations and grew to appreciate a lot the music. Because I still watched popular films and television, I did pick up some songs which were also popular in the late 1980s like rap, new wave and heavy metal, but it wasn't until the 2000s, when I was in my 20s, that I started actively branching out into non-rock genres.

Bands

These are rock bands and artists that are important to me.
