Robert Anson Heinlein (1907-07-07 - 1988-05-08) was an American science fiction author known for writing about rather controversial topics, yet becoming popular enough to be published in mainstream magazines.
The first book of his I read was Stranger In a Strange Land because it was ranked so high on many top sci-fi lists. I really enjoyed the book, however, after reading other titles by Heinlein, I discovered Stranger had a markedly different theme from his normal stories. In general, Heinlein's stories are politically Libertarian, his heroes are frequently callous and selfish, and Heinlein is pretty sexist even when he's trying not to be.
