A run and gun is an early genre of video game and sub-category of scrolling shooters. Like a scrolling shooter, the player shoots at a multitude of enemies while moving across a map that is slowly revealed, however, while scrolling shooters usually force the map scrolling on the player, run and guns usually allows the player to control the map's scrolling pace. Also, in scrolling shooters, the player is usually allowed to move freely around the screen, but, in a run and gun, the player is usually bound to the ground and must jump over obstacles like pits.
