The Newbery Medal.

The John Newbery Medal, often written as Newbery Medal, or simply, Newbery, is an annual award for children's literature given by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association. Since 1922, a book is awarded the medal each year, and, most years there are honorable mentions as well. The award is named after John Newbery, an 18th-century English publisher of juvenile books and is one of the most prestigious awards in children's literature. Eligibility for a Newbery requires the book be written by a US citizen or resident, must be published first or simultaneously in the United States in English, and must be published during the preceding calendar year.

Because the awards are a mark of excellence, books that win a Newbery Medal or Honor are usually reprinted with their award displayed prominently on the cover. However, the added popularity of the book often leads to it becoming challenged in libraries.

Personal

I remember hearing about Newbery Medals in elementary school as my teachers would often read them or suggest students read them for book reports. I read a few in school, but, because I really enjoy children's literature, many more as an adult. So far, I've read 20 books which have won a Newbery award, and, of those I've read, I've typically enjoyed them.

List

Those that are links are books I've read. If the award section is blank, the book received a Newbery Honor.
