LJN's logo.

LJN was an American toy company based in New York and founded in 1970. In 1985, LJN was purchased by MCA who hired third-party video game developers to create games based on their movie licenses. LJN published these games which were often hastily thrown together and of poor quality. After receiving bad press due to selling realistic looking toy guns, MCA sold the company to Acclaim in 1989, but Acclaim dissolved LJN in 1995. Despite going out of business, LJN's reputation for horrible games has caused their name to outlive the company by decades, especially to fans of the third and fourth generation of game platforms who used LJN as a punchline.

My knowledge of LJN came from the truly awful video games the published on the NES. At the time, I didn't realize that you could tell a lot from how good a game was going to be based on the publisher, and that certain companies consistently produced crap games with impressive sounding names or movie tie-ins. I thankfully purchased few LJN games, but I did rent or borrow my fair share of them, only to be hugely disappointed.

LJN published games on the NES, Game Boy, and SNES. All of them are terrible. There is one Dreamcast game which bears their logo published in 2000, but the company, which has been closed for years, had nothing to do with it.
