Howl's Moving Castle, known in Japan as ハウルの動く城 Hauru no Ugoku Shiro "Howl's Moving Castle" is an animated movie based produced by Studio Ghibli in 2004. It is based on the book Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones and converted to film by Hayao Miyazaki. The movie is about a girl named Sophie who, after meeting a rogue wizard named Howl, becomes cursed by a Howl's nemesis, a witch to resemble an old woman.

Howl's Moving Castle was about the fourth Miyazaki film I saw, and, while it wasn't as great as some of the other ones, I really like it. I'm also amazed at how much better the film is than the book, which is a rarity.

I have only seen the Japanese subtitled version, not Disney's English dub.

Review

Good

  • As usual, the background art is phenomenal and they really draw you into the fantasy world.
  • Most of the characters are really interesting. Unlike most Western cartoons, there isn't a caricature villain or a archetypal hero, but rather everyone has their flaws and talents.
  • The castle is very interestingly designed.
  • I found the film to be superior to the book in most respects.
