My first experience with the Highlander franchise was around 1992. I had seen Highlander II: The Quickening several times in the Kroger VHS rental and it always caught my eye. One day, I finally convinced my step-father to rent it for me. Having not seen the first film, I didn't have the slightest idea what was going on (not that it would really matter considering how different the second film was), but I still remember enjoying the crazy fight scenes and ridiculous special effects. Not too longer after, I was hanging out at my friend Kevin's house after school, and the TV series came on. Being a big fan of swords and Medieval fantasy, we both loved the premise of the show. We would watch the show fairly religiously for some time though the 1990s, we both really loved the title music Queen's Princes of the Universe. Some time later, around 1996, I finally saw the original Highlander at a VHS rental and convinced my mother to rent it. I really loved this film, and it helped cement the franchise into my favorites. I rented the first couple episodes of Highlander: The Series, and then, when I finally had money of my own, I began buying the films. I own the collector's edition of the first four on DVD, and a couple other versions of the films as well.

The Highlander film logo.

The Highlander universe is a fantasy / science fiction hybrid initially conceived of by Gregory Widen. The franchise includes six films, four television series, ten novels, comic books, video games, and various other forms of media.

The series is based around the concept of immortality. In the fictional universe, since the beginning of the human race, around one in a million births results in an immortal. They will age into young adulthood and then their body will simply stop aging. Most attempts to kill the person will prove futile as they will simply rise from the dead a few hours later and quickly heal from major wounds, however completely severing their head from their body will fully kill them. Their existence has always been viewed as evil sorcery to other mortals, so the immortals keep their existence secret. When an immortal kills another immortal, they gain all of the strength of the slain immoral, so many immortals try to seek out and murder each other to become even more powerful. When only one immortal remains, they will have godlike powers.

Not too long after, I was hanging out at my friend Kevin's house after school, and the TV series came on. Being a big fan of swords and Medieval fantasy, we both loved the premise of the show. We would watch the show fairly regularly for some time though the 1990s, we both really loved the title music Queen's Princes of the Universe.
