Black Sabbath was a seminal heavy metal band.

Heavy metal, often shortened to "metal," is a genre of music developed in the 1960s and 1970s, primarily in the USA and UK, from existing blues rock, psychedelic rock, and acid rock. The genre as the name suggests, it is a heavier version of its rock roots, incorporating more electric instruments with distortion, and lyrics which focus more on aggression and often the occult.

Pioneers of heavy metal include Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and Deep Purple, and later adopters, Alice Cooper, Kiss, Judas Priest, Motörhead, Iron Maiden. By the 1970s, the genre had grown significantly in popularity, so much that the genre was satirized by Spın̈al Tap. As the genre matured, it evolved into a variety of sub-genres like speed metal, thrash metal, black metal, power metal, death metal, glam metal, nu metal, and many others. In the 1980s, the sub-genres of heavy metal were really taking off, but traditional heavy metal was in decline, and, it saw very little radio play by the late 1990s.

Personal

By the time I started becoming interested in music in the early 1990s, heavy metal was already on its way out. However, because my father's music taste had a strong influence on my older brother and sister, and they typically controlled what I listened to, I heard a lot of heavy metal. I also preferred classic rock radio stations through the 1990s which played a lot of heavy metal.

Also, because heavy metal lyrics often includes topics related to fantasy and the occult, which I loved in my youth, I appreciated the genre more. I didn't care for the more abrasive later metal bands when I was young, like Metallica or Megadeth, however, they have since grown on me.
