Playing a game of Golf.

Golf is a puzzle video game developed by Ken Sykes and published by Microsoft in their Microsoft Entertainment Pack for Windows for Windows 3 in 1990. It is a video game version of the solitaire card game of the same name.

Personal

My first experience with Golf was on my family's Packard Bell 386SX my parents bought back in 1991. The PC must have been a showroom floor model because and it came with a little bit of demo software including the first Entertainment Pack. It took me awhile to understand how play Golf solitaire, especially that suit played no role. Once I figured out the rules, I didn't care much for the game because it ends very quickly, and the chance of winning, even when playing a perfect game, is quite low. I did once grind my way through a session losing dozens of times before finally getting a perfect game.

Status

I do not own this game, but I have beaten it.

Good

  • The game accurately enforces the basic rules of Golf solitaire.
  • I like the limited animation seen in some of the card backs.

Bad

  • Games are very short and an optimal strategy can be learned after only a few plays.
  • The game doesn't employ optional rules to make victory more likely, like being able to play queens or aces on kings.

Ugly

  • There is little in the way of media. There is no music, sound, and only extremely limited animation and the only customization available is in a couple rather ugly card designs.
