Always eager to read more video game books, I added this to my list after seeing it. Although I didn't know anything about Hardcastle's work, I still enjoyed the book.

Good

  • There are plenty of funny things throughout the book. Hardcastle had me chuckling through most of it.
  • Hardcastle is a good audiobook performer.

Bad

  • I have a nitpick about his description of third party games. He wrote that Atari let anyone make games for their 2600 console which helped cause the console's downfall. This isn't true, as Atari fought a lawsuit against Activision trying to prevent third-party games. Only after losing did the floodgates open on third-party titles, but, Atari published plenty of terrible games themselves. Also, he wrote that the Nintendo Seal of Quality helped to ensure good games would be released on the NES. This isn't true either, as the seal was mostly an advertising gimmick. Even when Nintendo had the most control over their console (the NES in the USA during the late 1980s and early 1990s), accounts from game developers say Nintendo rarely made demands on game design and usually only made suggestions. And, since there was a huge amount of crap released on the NES, they didn't do much to prevent bad games.

Ugly

  • Nothing.
