Edgar Allan Poe (1809-01-19 — 1849-10-07) was an American author best known for his poetry and short stories which usually have dark macabre themes which have greatly influenced Gothic literature and romanticism.
I first learned about Poe from his poem, The Raven, when I was a boy, but I didn't start reading any of his other work until my mid thirties. In general, I find his writing to be certainly mood-inducing, but it always feels like he's trying too hard to be scary. I like to read his work around Halloween time to help put me in the mood.
