Edgar Allan Poe
Edgar Allan Poe (1809-01-19 — 1849-10-07) was an American author best known for his poetry and short stories which usually have dark macabre themes which have greatly influenced Gothic literature and romanticism, particularly the horror and detective genres.
Personal
I first learned about Poe from his poem, The Raven, when I was a boy, but I didn't start reading any of his other work until my mid thirties. In general, I find his writing to be certainly mood-inducing, but it always feels like he's trying too hard to be scary. He also uses the word "countenance" far too frequently. I like to read his work around Halloween time to help put me in the mood.
