DragonLance Chronicles, Volume 2: Dragons of Winter Night is a fantasy novel written by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman and published in July of 1985. It is the second book in the DragonLance series. Although this novel isn't based on previous Advanced Dungeons & Dragons modules like the first, it still continues to story of the characters.

In the book, the heroes of the lance learn of the existence of Dragon Orbs, powerful artifacts which have the power to control dragons, and their attempts to collect as many as possible in order to defeat the Dragonarmy.

I read this book to follow up the original. It didn't really excite me any more about the series.

Review

Overall:

Rating-4.svg

— This section contains spoilers! —

Good

  • The story continues to be interesting, and most of the character interaction is enjoyable.

Bad

  • This book wasn't as interesting as the first, and I found most of the new characters to be rather dull.
  • Riverwind is still useless.
  • Fizban has a few moments where he isn't annoying, but he's really wearing out his welcome.
  • I find the comparisons to Caramon's strength rather tiresome. The gate would take ten men to lift, or one Caramon. Really?

Ugly

  • Raistlin's dominance over the dragon orb was a great scene, but it was totally ruined when the weaker Laurana was also able to do it, even without any of Raistlin's preparation.
  • The obvious D&D rules continue to ruin my suspension of disbelief. In particular, the idea of dragon fear is not actually mortals simply being afraid a huge thundering fire-breathing behemoth, but some sort of magic the dragon emits which has a precise 100' radius.
