Donkey Kong is a media franchise initially created by Shigeru Miyamoto at Nintendo initially as a video game on 1981-07-09 which is also the first appearance of Jump Man, later called Mario. The original game was extremely influential at starting the platformer genre, and it's popularity caused the franchise to expand into a number of other forms of media, including TV shows, comic books, and more. Because of the similarity in likeness between Donkey Kong and King Kong Universal Studios sued Nintendo, but lost.

Personal

I remember seeing variations of Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr. in arcades and home video game console in the 1980s, and, while I found them interesting to look at, I don't think I ever played the games. In the early 1990s, my cousin Brian had Donkey Kong 3 on the NES which I played numerous times, but didn't find very interesting. The first time I remember spending more than a little time on the original game was from the very limited Atari 2600 port around 1993. Not finding the franchise worthwhile, I didn't seek out the reboot in Donkey Kong Country. I tried various other versions of the game with the help of emulation including the NES ports and Arcade ports, but wasn't impressed. However, in 2021, I played the 1994 Game Boy version which I liked a lot. I still haven't tried any of the later series.
