Denis R. Loubet (last named pronounced "lou BAY") is an artist who has worked extensively in the gaming industry since 1979. He has created both digital and traditional art for video games, pen-and-paper RPGs, books, manuals, magazines, advertisements, and more. He began his professional career in 1979-1948 working for Steve Jackson Games, then became a freelance artist from 1984-1987 although he continued to produce art for Steve Jackson Games, but also Origin Systems and Hero Games. From 1987-1997 he was hired as a Senior Artist art Origin. From 1997-1998 he was the V.P. of art at Illusion Machines. From 1998-2001 he worked freelance for several major game companies. From 2002-2009 he worked as the artist and co-owner of Asylumsoft as it was bought by TKO Software and eventually Iron Will Games. He also co-founded Pixel Mine Games 2007 and worked there until 2009. Since then, Denis has been working freelance and still contributing to various gaming projects.
Though I had grown up with Denis's art, I wasn't really aware of it until I started delving deeper into the credits of the game industry. Then, I discovered that Denis had painted the art for many of the video game boxes I loved as well as made graphics for many of my favorite games.

Cover of Ultima III: Exodus (1983). Exodus is a demon with bat wings, furry legs, great talons, a scaly muscular torso, and a cavernous skull. He is perched on a boulder above a magma pool holding a strange fire in his hands.
Cover of Ultima V: Warriors of Destiny (1987). This is such a heroic painting. The Avatar defends the fallen Shamino against three shrouded evil spirits.
Cover of Times or Lore (1988). I love the look of the barbarian leaving the dark gates of the castle and entering into the vast, bright, and dangerous world.
Cover of Ultima VI: The False Prophet (1990). A wonderful propaganda piece: a blonde white hero effortlessly stamps out the vile gargoyle menace. Perfect for the game's theme.
Cover of Martian Dreams (1991). Victorians gaze from a porthole on the surface of the red planet. I really like the color use in this painting and the attention to detail on the jewelry.
Cover of Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss (1991). A bloodied warrior makes his way through an underground labyrinth with hordes lurking in the shadows. Great color contrast, and I love how it's framed with the brick archway.
Although Loubet is credited in several games as a graphic artist, he's usually credited along with several other artists, so I can't be sure which images are his.
