Reviews
Game
Ultima Underworld was a vastly superior game for its day. It used a sophisticated 3D engine that included slanted walls, floors, and ceilings, and dynamic lighting. All this, and it was released before Wolfenstein 3D! Several years later even the DOOM engine couldn't handle several of those functions. Technology aside, Ultima Underworld also contained a beautiful world of mystery and danger where you play the Avatar wrongly imprisoned in the Stygian Abyss and forced to rescue a king's daugher in order to get out again.
Music
The music for Ultima Underworld was composed by the legendary "Fat Man", George Sanger and another member of Team Fat, David Govett. Together they put together a very nice soundtrack with foreboding ambiance and powerful combat music.
Ripping
The soundtrack was recorded using a Roland MT-32 synthesizer. There are actually two XMI soundtracks in the game's data files. The ones used have a UW prefix to the filename and are the proper sounding files. I assume that the AW prefixed files were for SoundBlaster. Both XMI sets are included in the ripped soundtrack to be thorough.
