Game
Tyrian is a well developed shoot-em-up where you pilot a ship in search of revenge on the Microsol corporation after you discover that they've killed your best friend. You blast through many stages of scrolling combat collecting money to upgrade your ship and data messages that offer hints for the upcoming stages. Tyrian also includes an "arcade" style of game play that is more true to the classic shmup style. Because of the detail forged into the game, as well as the exciting action and impressive music, Tyrian became one of the best known shumps for DOS.
In 2004, Tyrian was released as freeware, so you can now enjoy it, as well as to 2000 Windows port, for free.
Music
Tyrian has exceptionally high fidelity music for FM synthesis; almost on par with MOD music. Alexander Brandon proves himself to be a competent composer with 41 tracks that fit wonderfully in the science fiction action realm of Tyrian. Most of the music is ambiance, so there are a few slower, duller tracks, but all of the combat music is punchy and upbeat. The 2000 upgrade uses the same music as Tyrian.
Ripping
Tyrian's music files can be ripped from the Music.mus file. The beginning of the file is a list of offsets for where the individual music files start in the file. Tyrian 2000 uses the same file. The titles and track order come from the Jukebox inside the Setup program.
