Game

Mystic Towers is an action maze game where you play the part of the seasoned Baron Baldric; an old man who also happens to be a wizard. He is sent by his civilians to go and clear the towers of the monster generators that have been plaguing them. Donning your walking stick of magic, you must enter the towers, kill all the monsters, find hidden treasure, and make your way through the puzzles and traps to get to the top.

Overall, the game is average. It has good graphics for the time, nice music, and funny animation, but the game play isn't that exciting. Most of the monsters act the same, the puzzles are often tedious and dull, and it's fairly easy to beat. Like all games that use an isometric view, it hard to line up your attacks, so a lot of the game is spent accidentally shooting at walls.

Music

Because Mystic Towers was originally created for Amiga, the higher quality MOD music was carried over giving it a step above the more common MIDI music that most of the DOS games were using at the time. Although the soundtrack is kind of short with only a couple long tracks, they are really good compared to much of the music of the time.

Ripping

The Protracker MODs were ripped from the RGMystOz.dat file, located in the installed folder. At the end of the file is a footer which gives the offset and file name for each file. There are ten files with a MOD extension, however two of them do not follow the MOD extension. These two files are included in the rip archive, but have the extension *.mod.bad. The rip titles have been extrapolated from the meta data in the MOD files if one exists, or from the file name in the footer if no meta data is present.

Book 2.mod won't play properly in most MOD players including the Winamp plugin or the Oldsk00l plugin. I had to use MOD Plug Player to get it to play properly.
