Game

While Heretic was just DOOM re-skinned to be a fantasy game, Hexen actually reworked the game engine and updated the genre all together. Doors could swing on an axis, you could jump, fly in the air, look at angles, water now has a current that will push you along. There are also ambient sound effects to improve the atmosphere, a hub style level system, an inventory, and of course the ability to choose a particular warrior class (fighter, cleric, mage). The Serpent Riders aren't at all pleased about what you did to their companion, so they decided to enter your world and kill everyone. They missed you, and now it's time to pay them back. by hunting down Korax. The game was a great improvement over DOOM and Heretic, and certainly a lot of fun to play.

Music

Hexen has very nice music. There are several ambient tracks, as well as many upbeat powerful tracks, and some jazzy tunes as well. Also, with such a large library of music it doesn't get annoying through repetition.

Ripping

Hexen's music exists in two incarnations. There are 37 MUS tracks released with the disk version of the game (ripped from the Hexen.wad file) and 21 higher quality tracks for the CD version. Both rips are available for download. The CD version is the same music as the disk version, only it was recorded by using a much stronger synthesizer than what is heard from the MUS files. There are two tracks in MUS rip (136 and 137) that are not used in game at all. The titles for the files come from the DOOM Wiki. The disk version of Hexen supports several soundcards, but a General MIDI card will yield the best audio results. Tracks labeled 1XX are the MUS rip, tracks labeled 2XX are from the CD.
