Module (*.mod)
Description
MOD is like a combination between MIDI and WAV. Like MIDI it stores instructions for playing music, but unlike MIDI it also stores audio samples. These samples are then played using various adjustments to alter their pitch and timbre. This allows for a much more sophisticated and robust sound compared to MIDI, but it also takes more memory and processing power to play. However, it's still much smaller than WAV.
The first music generation program (or "tracker") to use the MOD extension was created by Karsten Obarski and called SoundTracker. However, over the years several other trackers would use the MOD extension, but with variations to the format. Some of the more common trackers to use the MOD extension inlcude ProTracker, StarTrekker, FastTraker, and ChipTracker.
