Yasunori Mitsuda was born on January 21st, 1972 in Tokuyama, Japan. At a young age he learned about music and computers, but was more interested in sports. By high school he had a new respect for music and attended the Junior College of Music in Tokyo where his professors kept him in the local music scene. One of his instructors introduced him to making music for videogames and got him an interview with Squaresoft. Although his interview went poorly, Squaresoft liked his demo tape and he was hired in 1992.
Most of his early work was spent porting real music into formats playable for console systems, but in 1995 he demanded to be allowed to compose. He was given the chance to write the majority of the music for Chrono Trigger while being guided by Nobuo Uematsu (of Final Fantasy music fame). His work was received very well by the videogame community and he has composed several soundtracks since then.
Like many great composers Yasunori has the ability to write music in many different styles to best fit the mood required in the game. He obviously has Asian influences, but also a strong Celtic backing.
