Michael Trent Reznor was born in Mercer, Pennsylvania on May 17, 1965. He was called by his middle name to prevent confusion with his father who was also named Michael. At age five Reznor showed an interest in music when he started paying the piano. At school Reznor learned to play a number of instruments as part of the jazz and marching bands. He also partook in the drama club being involved in the performances Jesus Christ Superstar and Music Man.
After Reznor graduated high school in 1983, he went to Allegheny College and took classes in music and computer engineering, but he became bored with college and dropped out to become a professional musician. After being part of several failed bands, Reznor eventually found himself as a handyman working at Right Track Studio (now Midtown Recording). He was able to use the studio during it's off-time to record some of his early work that would eventually appear on his first album, Pretty Hate Machine.
Reznor released several albums under the name Nine Inch Nails. His album releases are done almost entirely by himself, but when he performs live he has a band to play for him so that he can focus on vocals.
Due to his fascination with DOOM, Reznor was put in contact with the development team, id Software, where he was able to collaborate with them to create the soundtrack to Quake. He was also working on the soundtrack to DOOM 3, but for personal reasons he abandoned the project.
