Thomas Million John Turpin

Thomas Million John Turpin was born in Savannah, GA on Novermber 18th, 1871 as the son of a freed slave. In the 1880s his family moved to St. Louis, MO. Turpin taught himself music and became a popular ragtime artist by publishing the first black ragtime composer. In 1905, Turpin helped open the Rosebud Café which became a popular gathering or ragtime's best performers. Turpin died on August 13th, 1922.
