Arne was born in the Covent Garden area of London on March 12th, 1710. At a very young age he was interested in music, but his father wanted him to become a lawyer. He attended Eton College while growing up.
Arne did not become a lawyer like his father wanted, and instead pursued music professionally. In 1732 he taught his sister and brother to sing, and in 1733 his sister performed his first opera, Rosamund.
Arne married the singer Cecilia Young in 1736 and in he started to become very popular in England. He was even observed by Fredrick, Prince of Wales when he first performed his most famous piece, "Rule, Britannia!"
In 1755, Arne separated from his wife, claiming her mentally ill, and begun a relationship with his student Charlotte Brent., but just before his death in 1777 he and his wife reconciled their relationship.
Arne died on March 5th, 1978. He was buried at St. Paul's in Covent Garden, London. He was survived by his son Michael.
