Stephen Collins Foster was born on July 4th, 1826 in Lawrenceville, PA. He taught himself song writing and music composition. Foster published his first song at 18, and eleven more by the time he was 24. He then married and became a professional songwriter. Perhaps the most popular song composed by Foster is "Oh, Susana", although he has composed many other known American folk songs. Because there was no music industry to speak in his time, and because Foster didn't perform his music personally, he didn't make very much money from his compositions. Foster died on January 13th, 1864.
