Russell Lieblich
Biography
Aliases: None
Home Country: Unknown
Russell Lieblich was born on 1953 and raised in New York City, New York. He would go on to attended college in Brooklyn. He later moved to San Diego and attended the University of California. He studied physics, but got his Masters degree in Music. By this time he was proficient on the piano and the saxophone.
After he graduated, Lieblich got a job teaching music. In his spare time he would compose music and surf. In 1980 there was a musician strike and he lost his job, but shortly thereafter he was hired by Mattel's new videogame division, Intellivision, as a programmer and composer. He was the fifth person hired to the division which at its peak was over 200 people. Only half a year after being hired Lieblich quit due to his growing disapproval of the department leader.
It just so happened that Activision started looking for programmers who had experience on Mattel's Intellivision system in the fall of 1982. Lieblich was hired and continued to write music. He remained at Activision all through the 80s and 90s helping Activision's developers create music for their games. Lieblich is often noted as the first musician to be involved with rhythm games (games based around music).
Lieblich continued to write game music until his last game in 1998. In his final years Lieblich was performing jazz music at lounge clubs and various other venues.
Lieblich past away on January 26, 2005 outside his home in Long Island, New York due to a heart attack. He was 53 when he died. He is remembered by the remix scene having had several of his songs made popular once again.
