Johann Strauss II was born in Vienna, Austria on October 25th, 1825. Strauss' father, also a composer, did not want his son to follow in his footsteps and become a musician. Strauss, however, studied the violin in secret., but had a difficult time trying to find work because of his father's influence. Strauss eventually became a noted musician under his own merit. Strauss would eventually surpass his father in popularity through the quality of his waltzes, polkas, and marches. Strauss died on June 3rd, 1899. Probably Strauss' best known work is the waltz "An der schönen blauen Donau", which is known in English as "The Blue Danube".
