Archive History: 2008 - 2007 - 2006 - 2005

2008/06/12

The old Capcom soundtrack for Code Name: Viper is now online. Listen to some of the tracks that you never got a chance to hear because the game was so difficult. Also, there is now a Vorbis tutorial that explains the various methods for getting Vorbis files to work on devices like the iPod, Zune, and SanDisk, as well as playing it in programs like Windows Media Player, QuickTime, and iTunes.

2008/06/11

The heavy metal score of the famous home brew game, Soldat, is now online along with pages for the game's composers Michal Marcinkowski and Marshall Anderson. There has also been a change to the composer pages. Aliases are now created dynamically by how the composer is credited in each game. This will cause a minor decrease in aliases until proper credits can be discovered, but then you'll see a steady increase overall.

2008/06/09

The soundtrack for the very popular Genesis game, Gunstar Heroes is now available for download. There is also a page for the game's composer, Norio Hanzawa. You'll also note that the composers are now grouped by page. The old style of putting them all on one page was getting a little crowded. This new layout not only has all the names as the old one, but also all of the aliases that the composers use, so now you can find a composer regardless of how their name was displayed in the game. Also, you can also now tell at a glance which composers have pictures, home page links, and entries in Wikipedia.

2008/06/06

The ripped soundtrack of Xatax is now online in its unknown FTF format. The format is only here as a place holder until a player is made to support it. All five of the Pixel Painters games are now available. Also, with the integration of Naoki Maeda into the database, the conversion from the old site layout to the new database is finally complete. It took a year and three months to convert everything, but the new layout is much better than before. This will aide the development of new features for the Videogame Music Preservation Foundation.

2008/06/05

The latest soundtrack addition comes from the last game created by the Pixel Painters Corporation before they went out of business, Dig It!. Chances are you've never heard of this game (the reason Pixel Painters went out of business), but it's actually quite interesting. The game is what happens when you turn Dig-Dug into a platformer, and the music has a great techno sound thanks to the Loudness Sound System. The unknown format page has also been updated to no show every game in the database whose music format is still unknown.

2008/06/04

The soundtrack from the Sega Gensis' most loved videogame ever, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, is now online. Along with the soundtrack are pages for the massive army of an audio team, including Masato Nakamura, Tomoyuki Shimada, Izuho Takeuchi, Macky, Jimita, Milpo, S. O, Oyz, and Nagao N. Gee, most of whom were never heard from again. With this huga addition, the amount of composers have actually surpassed the number of games.

2008/06/03

Another one of Martin Galway's amazing soundtracks for the Commodore 64 has been added today. The soundtrack from a game that many geeks of the late 1980s will remember is now online, that's right, the classic Wizball. The page is quite complete as well with the ripped soundtrack, the Vorbis recording, and an album that features the game's music. Enjoy!

2008/06/02

The rip and Vorbis soundtracks of the Commodore 64 port of Times of Lore are now available for you to listen to. This is now the third port of Times of Lore in the Videogame Music Preservation Foundation. Also, a page has been created for Tadakazu Okano, one of the sound creators for Chrono Trigger.

2008/05/28

The ripped soundtrack of the unique puzzle game, Laser Light is now online. Like the last Pixel Painters game, it doesn't have a recorded soundtrack because the FMF format is still unsupported. When a player becomes available, we'll record the soundtrack to Vorbis. In the meantime, I've added Chiharu Minekawa and Paul Radek. Minekawa worked on the sound effects for several Squaresoft games and Radek was the sound engine composer for several Apogee/id Software games.

2008/05/27

The soundtrack from the old Sega fantasy/sci-fi RPG, Phantasy Star III: Generations of Doom is now online. It's a nice slice of nostalgia for those of you who were saving princesses back in 1990. Listen to that wonderful town music all over again. The game's composer, Izuho Takeuchi, now has his own page as well, although not much is known about him.

2008/05/23

The soundtrack of the Arkanoid clone Electranoid is now online. Currently, only the rip for the soundtrack is available because its format, FMF doesn't yet have a player. When one is written the soundtrack will be recorded properly. Electranoid's composer is unknown, but Yoshitaka Hirota, a composer and sound designer who worked on several Squaresoft and Sacnoth games, has been added to fill in the gap. Teri Madsen, who did audio mastering on MechWarrior 2, has also been added.

2008/05/22

The CD audio soundtrack for the multiplayer space flight combat simulator Star Wars: X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter is now online. The game didn't do so well, but it was helped along with the music from the famous composer, John Williams. In addition, the famous Nintendo composer, Koji Kondo, has finally been added to the database and the sound effects contributor for Ken's Labyrinth, Andrew Cotter, has been added.

2008/05/21

The ripped soundtrack of Vinyl Goddess From Mars is now online. Currently, there are no music players that support the unique format, so there isn't a recording of the music, but hopefully this will convince some programmers to make a player for the format. Information on how to do so can be found on the VGFM page. Also, pages have been created for the game's audio team, Marc Gravelle and Frank Krul.

2008/05/20

Several updates today. Most importantly, there is a new soundtrack. The NES port of Double Dragon is now online for your listening pleasure. It's a nice complete package with proper music titles, a composer (Kazunaka Yamane), and an album. Also, I've added the box art of each game that get's added so you can tell, at a glance, what the new game is. Finally, the platforms page has been given a little work. It now keeps track of how many soundtracks exist on each platform.

2008/05/12

2008/05/09

The soundtrack from the NES port of Tiger-Heli is now online. The game lacks credits, so if anyone knows about the composer, send us an email.

2008/05/08

Since the last eleven additions have all been PC soundtracks I decided to do a couple console games that I've been neglecting. The new soundtrack comes from the game Abadox. I never played it back in the day, but I found it to be a charming, yet difficult, shump now that I'm a grown-up.

2008/05/07

The soundtrack for SIM Town in now available for download and a page has been constructed for the game's composer, Joey Edelman.

2008/05/06

2008/04/24

We have a nice big update today. The soundtrack of the simulator Zeppelin: Giants of the Sky has been added along with the game's composers Sven Vogelgesang and Matthias Steinwachs as well as the undocumented work of Andras Molnar and Felix Mendelssohn. This is also the first game added that uses the Loudness Sound System audio format. Many other games have their audio format listed, and each format page has a tally for how many games use the specific format.

2008/04/21

The soundtrack of Kentris, an old homebrew from 1991 by Ken Silverman, has been added.

2008/03/07

I have many soundtracks that are in the works, and since I've reached the end of my technical skills of ripping for some of them, I've decided to go ahead and post them as is, in hopes that someone else with better ripping skills will be able to help. The latest soundtrack comes from the Chinese game, West Adventure. However, because the SysEx data has yet to be ripped there is currently no Vorbis soundtrack available--only the ripped soundtrack.

2008/02/14

I've added the unreleased music from the original DOS version to the ripped soundtrack of DOOM. It's not that much to listen to, since it's a collection of unfinished riffs, but it's interesting to hear some of the music in its early stages.
