Archive History: 2008 - 2007 - 2006 - 2005

2007/12/31

The Roland MT-32 soundtrack of Archer Maclean's Pool is the latest addition. This is a small rip, but it was a lot of fun to figure out. I'll have the similar "Jimmy White's Whirlwind Snooker" up pretty soon as well.

2007/12/27

The miniature soundtrack of SIM City Classic has been added. It's only one track, but Classic fans should remember it.

2007/12/26

After a nice gap in soundtracks, I've added a nice one. The Lords of Magic soundtrack is now available for download and the game's composer Keith Zizza has a page no as well. I've also taken a new stance on long music tracks in order to prevent massive downloads. If a track is over two minutes in length I will not loop it in the recording. This will prevent some of the 12 minute longs tracks that have been showing up in some of the games.

2007/10/30

I've finished re-zipping all of the soundtracks, so now they should all unzip properly in any standard zipping program. Also, the composer Jon Hare has been added into the database.

2007/10/29

The DOS version of the Duke Nukem 3D soundtrack is now online. I've also re-zipped several more of the older soundtracks. They should be all finished up by the next update.

2007/10/26

I've been made aware that the zip files for some of the older soundtracks won't open in certain unzippers. I've figured out this problem and am currently in the process of rectifying it. I should have everything fixed in a few days. Also, Winamp has released version 5.5, so I've updated some of the player information. Valve's composer Kelly Bailey has been moved into the database now.

2007/10/18

The soundtrack for the 1997 game Blood has been added. The game's composers have all been added as well, Daniel Bernstein, Guy Whitmore, Mike Cody, and Loudmouth. Also, I forgot to do this a few updates ago, but it's certainly worth mentioning. Sierra Music Central had a birthday back on August 31st. They're now in their 5th year online! Go check out their music collection, it's very impressive.

2007/09/13

The pages for the composers Sotaro Tojima and Frank Klepacki have been converted into the database. Also, the proper name of Soda Popkinski's theme in Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! has been added thanks to Flying Omelette.

2007/09/11

The latest soundtrack is from the Apogee game Mystic Towers and the game's composer Steven Baker has been added. Two more composers have been added because of the music in Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!. Wilhelm Richard Wagner and Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle now have pages.

2007/09/07

Two composers have been added, Georges Bizet and Mahlon Merrick. Bizet is a classical composer whose music is found in several games, and Merrick is a more recent composer most popular in the 1950's. It was pointed out to me by Flying Omelette that their music could be found in some of the games that are already in the VGMPF. Thusly, some of the track information for Tetris and Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! have been updated accordingly.

2007/08/31

The soundtrack of the DOS first-person shooter Strife is now available for download. A page has also been made for the game's composer, Morey Goldstein.

2007/08/10

The newest soundtrack comes from the awful NES port of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Heroes of the Lance. While the game is right terrible, the music is pretty good for an NES game. The music's composer, Seiji Toda now has a page as well. There is a new background and title image to give the game a nicer look.

2007/08/08

The last of the soundtracks from the old version of the site have been moved over. The Legend of Zelda soundtrack is now online. A few other updates have been made as well with some of the composers. I still have several major composers that need to be moved from the old format to the new database format, but after that the site will be completely converted. Also, the NSF player Nosefart has been added to the NSF page. Also, the Videogame Music Preservation Foundation is now two years old as of August 5th.

2007/08/03

The soundtrack of Chex Quest 2, the sequel to Chex Quest, is now online. For such a lame idea these games have pretty decent music.

2007/08/02

The Tecmo Bowl soundtrack has been re-encoded and cleaned up. I also added both versions of the No Good music this time.

2007/08/01

The soundtrack from the game Chex Quest has been added as well as the audio team for the game, Andrew Benson and Mike Koenigs.

2007/07/31

The soundtrack to the SNES port of SIM City has been re-encoded. The SPC rip also now has proper timing and a few extra songs that were missed last time have been added.

2007/07/30

The NES soundtrack of Section Z has been cleaned up and re-encoded. Only three more games are left before the conversion is completed.

2007/07/27

It's been awhile, but never fear; there are plenty of soundtracks on the way. Today's new soundtrack is Hexen: Beyond Heretic, including the disk and CD versions. I also re-ordered the Age of Empires soundtrack so that the CD and MIDI soundtracks are properly grouped.

2007/06/26

Another one of Kenta Cho's games has been added. The techno soundtrack of Mu-cade is now online and ready for download.

2007/06/11

The soundtrack for another first-person shooter is now online. Check out the great audio of Heretic. I also added a page for the game's composer, Kevin Schilder. There are several new images to Frank Klepacki's page as well.

2007/06/08

The soundtrack of Rise of the Triad: Dark War is now available for download. I also added a page for the game's primary composer Lee Jackson.

2007/06/05

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past soundtrack has been re-encoded and the rip now has the correct time and ID666 tags.

2007/06/01

The soundtrack for the unfinished homebrew game, Age of the Dragon is now online. The game was a project for Ultima fans, but it was eventually scrapped. The rough draft music is still available though.

2007/05/30

The soundtrack for Commander Keen VI: Aliens Ate My Babysitter is now online. The Videogame Music Preservation Foundation now has over 100 Vorbis soundtracks available for download! This past month has been the most productive month yet for the VGMPF. There have been 15 updates, 8 new soundtracks, a couple of new composers, and a whole bunch of clean ups. Also, I've created a forum for my entire web site, and there is a special section just for this page. If you want to discuss videogame music or ripping/recording music, just sign-up on the forum and start a thread.

2007/05/29

The soundtrack for the NES port of Shadowgate has been re-encoded. Several more composers have been moved into the database. The conversion is nearing completion.

2007/05/25

The soundtrack for Commander Keen V: The Armageddon Machine is now online with all the bouncy tunes that you remember. And don't worry, Commander Keen VI is soon to follow.

2007/05/24

The Metroid soundtrack has been re-encoded, which leaves only six games left to fix up. I also updated the page of the game's composer, Hirokazu Tanaka, with some more information and pictures.

2007/05/23

It is with deep pride that I present this next soundtrack. It's from a game that was not only a technical success for the PC market, but also something that gamers in the early 1990's could appreciate and enjoy. A game that showed that it was possible to have an excellent action platformer of console quality on a PC. The game I'm talking about is Commander Keen IV: Secret of the Oracle and that familiar soundtrack is now online.

2007/05/21

Several games have been updated today and there is a new soundtrack. The music from the three-part game Bio Menace is now online. Also, the titles of Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold, Blake Stone: Planet Strike, Corridor 7: Alien Invasion, The Goonies, and Operation Body Count have been re-titled in order to match the ripped file's meta data or available albums. The Winamp version information has also been updated now that Winamp 5.35 is out.

2007/05/16

The soundtrack for Operation Body Count has been re-encoded and it's page has been updated considerably.

2007/05/15

The popular Genesis RPG Shining Force is now online. As is the game's composer Masahiko Yoshimura. Also, the track titles for the game Raiden II have been updated to match the game's published soundtrack and the composer, Akira Satoh now has a page as well.

2007/05/14

Another soundtrack has been re-encoded and equalized. The NES port of Déjà Vu is now clean. There are also a few more soundtracks added to various games as well.

2007/05/11

The soundtrack for Mega Man II has been re-encoded and equalized. There are only nine more soundtracks that need to be re-encoded until they're all up to date. I also moved several more games into the database.

2007/05/09

There is a nice big update today. First of all, we have our first Sega Genesis soundtrack now with the addition of Sonic the Hedgehog. The game music's composer, Masato Nakamura has been added as well. There is a new format page for the VGM format of the Genesis music and a VGM player is available for download. Also, the Ultima: Exodus page has been updated with the game's album, and also the tracks have been renamed to reflect the album titles. There have been a lot of updates to the database rendering engine and now all of the letter pages have been converted to the new database structure. They're still missing several games which will be added as I transfer the remaining games into the database.

2007/05/08

The soundtrack for the NES port of Top Gun has been re-encoded and equalized. Also, the game's composers have been discovered in the credits of the Japanese version and new pages have been added for Kazuki Muraoka and Kouji Murata.

2007/05/07

The soundtrack of the obscure game Sango Fighter is now online; it's another Roland MT-32 soundtrack. Also, our 100th composer has been added. Atari's own Brad Fuller, who worked on the soundtrack to Marble Madness and many others, is now online. You'll also notice that all of the converted games now have a link to their Wikipedia page if it exists.

2007/05/02

The soundtracks for The Goonies II and Ultima: Exodus have both been equalized and re-encoded. I also added a page for Jakob Svanholm better known as Radix. Also a large number of various other pages have been updated to the new database structure. Almost all of the games have been updated now, but there are still a lot of composers remaining.

2007/05/01

A little mini-game called 4Four has been added with its mini soundtrack (making this the 100th ripped game). The game's composer Matthew Steele has been added and so has the S3M format. I'm also edging my way closer to finishing up the database conversion.

2007/04/30

The soundtrack for Spy Hunter has been re-encoded to the new standards. There is a new composer page made for the originator of Spy Hunter's theme music, Henry Mancini.

2007/04/27

The newest addition is the soundtrack of the DOS game Wacky Wheels which has a pretty nice soundtrack. A of course, a page has been made for the music's composer Mark Klem. Also, version 5.34 of Winamp has been released and I've updated the player page with the new version information and download. We've also just exceeded 2 gigabytes online!

2007/04/26

Another soundtrack from one of the older NES games has been uploaded today. City Connection, a game ported over from the arcade, is now available. There is also a page for the Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky who was the inspiration for two of the tracks in the game.

2007/04/25

The soundtrack for A Boy and His Blob has been re-encoded. Also, the Famicom 20th Anniversary Album, Volume 2 was added to the Zelda II: The Adventure of Link page.

2007/04/23

The soundtrack for the DOS port of Times of Lore has finally been recorded. There is also an addition to the submissions page for unknown classical music composers. The section will be updated whenever a soundtrack is added that is missing the name or track title in of an unknown classical composer. If you think you may be able to help recognize the title or composer please check the page.

2007/04/19

The soundtrack of the NES port of Gauntlet. has been re-encoded and equalized and a missing track was added. The game's composer Hal Canon's page has also been updated with several other game he's worked on.

2007/04/18

The soundtrack of Excitebike has been re-encoded and equalized. A lot more of the site has been incorporated into the database as well. Some of the composers have their localized names and all of the new games do.

2007/04/17

Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!'s soundtrack is now available to download. It's not that great but who could ignore a classic? Also, there are pages for each of the game's composers, A. Nakatuka, Kenji Yamamoto, and Yukio Kaneoka.

2007/04/16

The soundtrack for Bad Dudes has been re-encoded for better quality. The game's composers have also all been updated with a few more games and newer information.

2007/04/13

The latest addition is the Windows game Machines of Destruction and the game music's supposed composer, Bill Tilbrook. Machines of Destruction uses mode music, specifically XM and IT. The IT format is new, so there is a page for it. Also, for the composers whose names don't use the Latin alphabet, I've included the proper spelling of their name using their local alphabet.

2007/04/12

I've re-encoded the Vorbis files to the NES version of Times of Lore and increased the volume to match the rest of the music here. I also renamed Shogo Sakai to Shougo Sakai (his proper romaji name) and updated his gameography with several games.

2007/04/11

100 GAMES ONLINE!

The 100th game has finally been added. The MIDI and XMI rip of Ultima VII: The Black Gate, along with the Vorbis recording via a Roland MT-32 is now online. This is not only a landmark to the site by making it into the triple digits, but it is also the webmaster's favorite game soundtrack ever. Pages have been added for the new composers as well including Kathleen Jones, Kirk Winterrowd, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Thomas Arne and the game's primary composer Dana Glover. You'll also notice that games with non-English titles that are being generated through the new database engine they will have the proper localized spelling of their titles. Also, the database conversion is about halfway complete. Now the archive pages and the home page are database generated.

2007/03/29

The soundtrack of DOOM II: Hell On Earth has been re-encoded and given a proper ten second fadeout. Also, the MUS files have been re-ripped so we now have all the correct MUS rips from the game to replace the old MIDI conversions. If you take a look at the formats page you'll see several new additions, one in particular is that each format page lists the games that use the format. The lists aren't complete because I'm still integrating the old game information into the new database, but they'll be completed soon.

2007/03/28

The Diablo soundtrack has been re-encoded and more release and credit information has been given. If you're wondering why the past several updates have merely been re-encodings it's because when the VGMPF was still new a lot of the soundtracks were recorded straight to Vorbis with varying volume issues. Now that there are more standards for the site many of the soundtracks are being reworked to follow the new standards and also being encoded into FLAC so that any other changes can easily be made.

2007/03/26

The soundtrack for Life Force has been re-encoded and cleaned up. The proper music titles are have been applied and the correct mini boss music has been added in since it was missed last time. The Salamander albums have been added to the page as well.

2007/03/23

The DOOM soundtrack has been re-encoded, cleaned up, and properly numbered. I also have a newer version of the rip up that has all the proper names in their correct MUS format.

2007/03/22

The Wolfenstein 3D soundtrack has been re-encoded and properly equalized. The page has also been updated to the new format. Also, several pages are now generated from the new database engine instead of hand-edited HTML, so they'll have a cleaner code set than before.

2007/03/13

Another one of Kenta Cho's shoot-em-ups has been added. This time it's his 2005 release, Gunroar. It has a nice techno soundtrack which has become typical of his games. I also have a nice big game soundtrack planned for our 100th game. In the meantime, don't forget to subscribe to our blog on MySpace.

2007/03/08

The Ultima V: Warriors of Destiny soundtrack for the Commodore 64 is now online. I've added a new Ogg codec for Microsoft Media Player to the Vorbis page. This will let you play all Ogg container files (FLAC, Speex, Theora, and Vorbis) in Microsoft's sorry excuse for a media player for those of you who still use it. I also updated some version numbers since WinAmp 5.33 is now out.

2007/03/06

The soundtrack to the Windows version of SIM Life is up along with the pages for the game's music composers Steve Hales and Russell Lieblich. And once again I'm advertising the MySpace blog to anyone who wants to get updates.

2007/03/05

The soundtrack of the first Mega Man is now online. Don't forget to subscribe to the new MySpace blog to get the latest updates.

2007/03/01

There is a nice big update today. First of all, I've created a MySpace page for the VGMPF. I'll use the MySpace blog so that you can subscribe and receive updates when they occur. As for game music, the soundtrack of the SNES port of Street Fighter II: Turbo - Hyper Fighting is now online along with he pages for its composers, Isao Abe and Yuki Satomura. Also, the Bionic Commando / Top Secret soundtrack has been re-encoded. It's volume has been normalized and the three part introduction has been combined into a single track with timing that matches the game. The platform field on every game has been updated to include every different platform that the specific music was used for. Thus, for a NES game that was released on the NES and the Famicom the game's platform field will reflect that. The WIN3 platform is now the W16 platform. The default width of each page has been increased to match as 1024x768 monitor and I changed the default font to Verdana.

2007/02/14

I've done a bit of clean up work. The archive page was getting too large so I broke it out by year. The composers are getting a minor face-lift to make them easier to read. I also added a couple more link graphics.

2007/01/25

The Commodore 64 soundtrack of Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar is now online. I also put up a major update to Tony Mollick's biography since he was kind enough to grant me an interview.

2007/01/23

The first Commodore 64 has been added to the VGMPF, Ultima III: Exodus. And we should see plenty more C64 games in the future. This also means that a new format page has been created for SID files. I also gave the music format icons a makeover to look more standardized. You can see them all on the formats page.

2007/01/12

The NES classic Kid Icarus has been added now. I also went through all the games that have Japanese titles and put in their romaji conversions and English translations. I'm also trying to come up with a way to clean up the game list on the composer pages. Right now I have multiple entries of a game for each different release title which are separated in the list because they're sorted by published date. However, since the music is identical in each game it's redundant to have the multiple entries since this site doesn't bother with changes that don't relate to music. I plan on listing the initial release with the English title first and then listing each other variant after it with the released date, country, and system next to it, but I need to play around with the format first to see what it's going to look like.

2007/01/11

The Age of Empires soundtrack has been updated to include the MIDI version that was used when the game was installed to the hard drive and ran without the CD. The format template update is also complete so each page looks better and has a Wikipedia link where applicable.

2007/01/09

The soundtrack for The Goonies for the Famicom is up. I also re-encoded the soundtrack for Chip's Challenge to the newer naming conventions.

2007/01/08

The newest addition is a basic action game called Kung Fu Kim. I also re-encoded the Magic: The Gathering soundtrack since some of its tracks were corrupt. I'm redoing the format pages as well in order to make better use of the new style-sheet.

2007/01/04

After a long and boring session of updates all the game pages have finally been moved to the much cleaner new template and the color scheme has been slightly altered to make the pages easier to read.
