If free speech must be censored because it offends, than it isn't free speech.
On September 30th, 2005 the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten published 12 editorial cartoons featuring the Islamic prophet Muhammad in a negative light. Although this
offends the followers of Islam, it is a display of freedom of speech, freedom of expression, and freedom of media. Not only that, but the cartoons are pretty funny. The Muslims
don't share my ideals of humor and have taken to the streets in violent protest. According to Islam law, it is illegal to dipict Muhammad in order to prevent idolatry.
Several Islamic countries demanded that Denmark apologize for the cartoons and stop the paper from printing them, but no apology was made, and the cartoons were reprinted
by several other papers all over the world. So the Danish and Norwegian embassies in Syria were set on fire, death and bomb theats were sent to several people, and riots in
Afghanistan have left people dead (all in the name of religous righteousness mind you).
After hearing about this I became curious about these cartoons. Surely, I thought, they must be terrible to cause such unrest. I did a quick google search and didn't find
any pictures. It seems that most media companies have refused to show the cartoons because they are offensive. You have got to be kidding me. Well, after a bit more searching I
was finally able to find the cartoons, and because I'm not a sissy like the American media, I'm displaying them. Here are the original 12 cartoons.
All of this controvercy has spawned several more cartoons to insult and poke fun at the violent Muslims who feel it nessesary to kill in the name of peace. Here are a few
Well, there you have it. Personally, I'd like to see more cartoons of this nature. Not just insulting Islam, but all religions and cultures. Some people really need to
mellow out and grow a sense of humor.
Here are some photos of the protest signs. Apparently, the concept of freedom should go to Hell. Yes, I do expect to hear that from religious people, but the thing that
weirds me out is why they want to BOYKOT Lego so much! I know those brightly colored interlocking blocks are the spawn of evil and everything, but they're so much fun!
