Fencing

Fencing is a sport that has its roots in European sword duels starting primarily during the Renaissance period when quick light-weight swords became more practical than heavier weapons.

In fencing two opponents simulate ancient combat by using either a foil, epee, or saber. They try to score points on each other by hitting target areas of the body. The sport is very fast with attacks and parries happening sometimes faster than the eye can see. Modern fencing uses electronic devices in order to know when a hit is made.

Fencing was included into the Olympic program in 1896 where it remains to this day.
